Keep An Eye To Proper Form During Your Workouts
By Fred Smith, YWCA Fitness on 25th Personal Trainer
As a personal trainer, one of the most important observations we witness in the gym is the quality of our clients’ workout form. In fact, form feedback to the client is one of the most important functions of a personal trainer. By providing this feedback we help our clients to reach their goals faster through efficient effort. And, even more important than the efficiency gained, you will minimize your chances of injury. Proper form will allow a person to lift heavier weight… safely. You can also ensure you train your body with a mind towards symmetry.
How do you ensure you have proper form? There are a few ways. First, use the mirrors in the gym. Watching yourself in front of the mirror is the simplest, time-tested way to measure form. That is why the mirrors are there. Of course, you need to know what to look for. Helping with proper form is one of our primary responsibilities as a personal trainer and is one of the great benefits of having a trainer; whether it is for every workout or as a periodic checkup to measure progress. Other sources of information include books and web sites. Just make sure to check on the qualifications of your sources. And, at the YWCA, our Fitness Consultants can assist too. Through proper form you will gain self-awareness and the satisfaction that you are developing your body properly. Through observing proper form, you can take your workouts to the next level.
